Prescription to Get Your HOPE Back!

She sat across from me in my office on a weekday afternoon.

Shoulders slumped.

Sad eyes.

Not a bit of makeup on.

She was wounded.

Felt Rejected.

Facing Deep discouragement.

She’d given up on everyone and everything.

She felt like her life was OVER.

Her husband wanted out, and she felt like her whole world was falling apart and hopeless.

And, someone had sent her to talk to me.

After listening to her story, I got out a piece of paper and begin to write. I’d never done this before, but I felt led to try something with her.

I told her that I was giving her a “prescription” to get her hope back.\

Wherever you are, whoever you are and whatever you are dealing with today, I want to encourage you with this: There is always HOPE! Discover 12 ways to begin to get your hope back today.

As I wrote, I shared with her each of these prescribed steps she could take to get up and start living again with purpose.

(Before this meeting, I’d never written down this list).

But, on that day, I believe God gave me some useful suggestions for my friend to take and use.

~ Maybe today – you can relate to this woman?

~ Maybe you have lost some hope, or all hope?

~ Maybe your shoulders are drooping, and you are facing great discouragement?

~ Possibly you are reading this in the hopes that you can help a friend or family member who is completely deflated.

Hurting people are everywhere; they are all around us. I talk to them almost daily.

Wherever you are, whoever you are and whatever you are dealing with today, I want to encourage you with this:

There is always HOPE because we know the God of all Hope!

“I pray that God, the source of hope,

will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him.

Then you will overflow with confident hope through

the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13

Today, you can get your hope back and start living again.

Here are 12 Ways to Get Your HOPE Back Today:

1) SUPERSOAK  yourself with Jesus often.

Inundate yourself with the Lord Jesus like you never have before.

Romans 13:14 tells us to, “Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus.”

Press in as close as you ever have to the Lord. You can do this by:

  • Having 2 quiet times a day.
  • Carrying your Bible with you and opening it often.
  • Reading every good book you can find.
  • ONLY Listening to Christian music.
  • Getting really active in church.
  • Joining more than one Bible study.
  • Being alert for God to work.
  • Going hard after God!
  • Spend time with the most Godly people you know.

Our tendency is to pull away from God when we are hurt– don’t do this.

Push in closer!

Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those who are crushed in spirit.”

2) Allow yourself time to GRIEVE this hurt.

**There is some hurt and some pain in all of life.

And, all of us face it.

Maybe you need to take the – “30 DAY MOURNING” challenge.

Allow yourself to grieve for 30 days.

Listen to sad music or whatever it takes to let yourself cry it out.

  • Day one – 30 minutes to cry and grieve.
  • Day two – 29 minutes to cry and grieve.
  • Day three – 28 minutes to cry and grieve.
  • Day thirty – 1 minute to cry and grieve.

Psalm 30:5 (MSG) – “The nights of crying your eyes out give ways to days of laughter.”Wherever you are, whoever you are and whatever you are dealing with today, I want to encourage you with this: There is always HOPE! Discover 12 ways to begin to get your hope back today.

3) Do something PRODUCTIVE.

** Don’t just sit there feeling sorry for yourself!

Get up and do something.

  • Windex something.
  • Clean out a drawer or closet.
  • Do 2 loads of laundry.
  • Wash the car.

SERENITY PRAYER – “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

~ When you can’t change anything else, change the sheets on the bed!

4) Get OUT OF YOUR house.

**Open the blinds, open the windows, open the door, and get outside.

Go somewhere:

  • Take the dog or kids for a walk.
  • Go for a drive.
  • Wash you car.
  • Go to the park, mall, library, and be around people.

A change of proximity or scenery can help!

5) EXERCISE, workout, and sweat.

** Move your body, and you’ll feel better!

Sweat out some of those frustrations!

Don’t hold it all in.

  • Punch it out.
  • Run it out.
  • Bike it out.
  • Swing it out.
  • Walk it out.

~ Let off some steam in a healthy way.

6) TELL SOMEONE you trust how you are really doing.

** Speaking the hurt out loud is healing.

There is something about telling one other trusted friend the truth that makes it better.

ADRIAN ROGERS used to say – “What we uncover, God can cover. What we continue to cover, He will uncover.”

** Just come clean.

No more secrets.

No more pretending.

EXAMPLE – Sanctus Real Song – “I’m not alright. I’m broken inside.”

Can I lose my need to impress?

If you want the truth I need to confess

I’m not alright, I’m broken inside, broken inside

And all I go through, it leads me to You, it leads me to You

7) LAUGH at least a little.

** Laugh out loud! Hear yourself laughing!

  • Watch a funny show or movie.
  • Hang out with a funny friend.
  • Think back to something that makes you laugh.
  • Laugh at yourself

Wherever you are, whoever you are and whatever you are dealing with today, I want to encourage you with this: There is always HOPE! Discover 12 ways to begin to get your hope back today.Proverbs 17:22“A cheerful disposition is good for your health; gloom and doom leave you bone-tired.”

8) ENJOY THOSE around you who are going through similar challenges.

** Look around and enjoy the people you are with.

While you are hurting, try to make some new friends.

~ Others in your same place in life can empathize and relate better to you than maybe anyone else.

9) Look for the BLESSINGS while you are in this hard season.

** Look for the silver lining in the clouds, the pearls in the offense, the amazing good that could come out of the situation.

  • What could God possibly be up to?
  • What is He teaching you?
  • Are you becoming stronger?
  • Is He doing something for your husband or kids in this situation?
  • Is your lost neighbor watching and getting to see Jesus in your life?
  • Are there some benefits in this valley?

10) Play MOTIVATIONAL music.

** Turn on “Rocky’s Theme”

Or, “I Will Survive!”

Or, your Christian favorite music.

Sing it.

Dance to it.

Be uplifted even in the middle of the pain.

~ You can go to YouTube and hear just about any song you’d like to hear.

If you are in need of a positive song, here are a few of mine:

  • “In Christ Alone” by Travis Cottrell
  • “Our God” by Chris Tomlin
  • “His Eye is on the Sparrow” by Lauren Hill (featured below)

~ Ask God to give you a song, to lead you to some music that will lift up your soul!

11) Do something for SOMEONE ELSE.

** My former pastor used to say, “Give to other people what you need. If you need kindness, give it to someone. If you need encouragement, share it. If you need compassion, give it away.”

This may be tough at first, but it is really hard to feel sorry for ourselves while we are unselfishly loving on someone else!

  • Take a meal to someone who’s just had surgery.
  • Mow someone else’s lawn.
  • Take fresh flowers to a shut in.
  • Send a nice note, card or email.
  • Pray for a friend.
  • Take someone out for coffee or lunch.

I dare you to try this one!

12) CALL ON the name of Jesus.

Say His name often, “Jesus.”

~ When I don’t know what else to do. I just began to say the name of Jesus.

That’s it for my – Prescription to Get Your HOPE Back!

*However, I need to tell you the rest of the story…

About a year ago, I was traveling with a friend to a conference about 8 hours from home.

As we arrived at the lodge where we would be staying for the weekend, we slipped into the Ladies’ Room.

Just as the door to the bathroom was closing, I heard someone loudly yelling my name: “Melanie! Melanie Redd!”

I was 8 hours from home. I couldn’t imagine who it was.

But, this woman came running into the bathroom to find me.

As I exited the stall, she grabbed me and hugged me.

It was that same sad lady who had sat in my office some two years before – all weepy and discouraged and hopeless over the break-up of her marriage.

Only – this woman standing in front of me – was different.

She was smiling, full of life and happy!

She told me that our meeting and my “prescription for hope” had saved her life.

She had followed everything I’d written down that day, and she was doing great!

She had hope in her life and was moving head with purpose.

She had even typed up my 12 Suggestions and was sharing them with others who were hurting.

If fact, she had to give me her list because I had forgotten what I’d written down for her in the first place~

(I’d even forgotten that I had written it down at all)!

I don’t know where you are today, but I believe God can bring hope into anyWherever you are, whoever you are and whatever you are dealing with today, I want to encourage you with this: There is always HOPE! ~ Would you try just one of these suggestions today?

~ Would you take one of these ideas, and put it into practice right now?

~ Would you give God the chance to bring back the smile, the laughter and the sweetness in life again?

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you,

that you, always having all sufficiency in all things,

may have an abundance for every good work.”

  1. Great suggestions, Melanie! But what stuck out for me is that you followed the nudging to write that list that day in your office not knowing what the result might be. Then two years later you were blessed to see how your words helped bring healing to someone. Your story is an encouragement to keep on, even when we feel like we aren’t making a difference. We never know who all may be watching or how our words will affect them, but God does and He uses us as we follow His leading. Blessings to you! I’m visiting from #RaRaLinkup.

    1. Hey Gayl,

Thanks so much for stopping by today to leave a kind word! I love words of encouragement~

Isn’t it fun when we do get to see God use anything that we do. And, it’s even “funner” when He gives us a little glimpse into how He is using us.

Glad you were encouraged, and I pray that God will bless you and your ministry~

  2. I love your prescription for getting hope back. Psalm 34:5 tells us that those who look to God will never be disappointed. I’ve found in my own experience that times of heartache can reveal that I’ve placed too much hope in circumstances or in people, and not enough in my Savior. Thanks for linking up with us at Grace & Truth!

    1. Hey Jennifer,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a word of encouragement! I always appreciate at kind word.

And, it’s great to meet so many other blogging friends, like you.

      Blessings to you,

  3. This is a wonderful prescription, Melanie. So neat that you got to meet that lady again and learn how God had used the words you shared to point her to Christ to bring healing to her soul and restore her hope.

P.S. We were blogging on similar topics again this week. 🙂 Which is great since so many people are in need of hope today.

    1. Hey Abi,
Thanks so much for stopping by to leave a kind word! I appreciate you and your visit!
And, isn’t it fun when God lets us “see” Him work – especially much later.
I’ll stop by to check out your similar topic!
